Amy Conlin does
not know a thing about Utah's legal
system, and she cannot afford an attorney.
Yet the 22-year-old Salt Lake City
woman was able to file for divorce
on her own in an hour (using State
of Utah Online Court Assistance Program
Application).
The online application system is believed
to be the most sophisticated of its
kind in the country, said state Court
Administrator Dan Becker.
The application database was created
by Salt Lake City-based S Square Technologies
and includes 25 percent more features
than traditional printed forms. New
options include an application for
alimony and the ability to compute
the division of a pension or 401(k)
retirement plan, said Kim Allard,
a court information service manger.
The system will even compute how much
child support should be paid to whom,
based on a formula looking at income,
assets and who will retain custody.
